Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Cast iron false plate behind the dial: Birmingham dial mounting practice.
Oval shell paterae in the door and base: neo-classical cabinetwork.
Four finned brass pillars pinning the plates together: traditional eight-day movement build.
Horizontal grain shrinkage across the oak backboards: long-term drying of the timber.
Arch of the dial inscribed Paxton St Neots: marks the maker.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian oak longcase clock from the 18th century comes in a dark brown finish with brass details and glass. The tall case includes a swan neck pediment topped by a brass finial, an arched dial signed Paxton St Neots with Roman numerals, turned columns framing the dial, and decorative oval shell inlay on both the trunk door and the base. The movement has an eight-day two-train mechanism striking on a bell. Practical dimensions stand at 235 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. The piece sits upright on the floor as a freestanding timekeeper, suited for traditional hallways, living rooms, or studies in an English country house setting.

An eight-day longcase clock is a tall, pendulum-driven floor clock featuring a mechanical movement that requires winding once every eight days, originating in the late 17th century.

Georgian longcase clocks were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut for the case, with brass and iron utilised for the movement mechanism and dial components.

Authentic 18th-century longcase clocks often feature hand-engraved brass or painted dials, hand-cast brass spandrels, cast iron weights, and period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the case.

An antique longcase clock serves as an architectural anchor in modern interiors when placed against neutral walls, paired with minimalist furnishings or modern artwork to create visual contrast.

Maintain an antique longcase clock by ensuring the case remains level, keeping it away from direct heat sources or dampness, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced and lubricated every five to seven years.
