Description

An outstanding antique leather barrel back wing armchair. This was made in England, it dates from the early twentieth century, likely around the 1920’s.

It is of superb quality, this is of generous proportions and is extremely comfortable. The design is beautiful, with a wonderful curved barrel shaped back, the deep buttoned leather frame stand on tapered mahogany legs.

The colour of the leather is absolutely beautiful, we have had the leather revived by our leather restorer, the legs have also been re-polished. The condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor surface wear here and there, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wingback chairs emerged in Britain during the seventeenth century, originally designed to protect sitters from drafts in unheated rooms and to trap heat from fireplaces.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames, traditional coil spring foundations, horsehair or wool stuffing, and full-grain leather upholstery secured with individual brass tacks.

Authenticity indicators include hand-tied coil springs, vegetable-tanned leather showing natural patination and wear patterns, hand-forged or early brass nail heads, and traditional joinery within the wooden frame.

Pairing the substantial form of a leather armchair with minimalist contemporary lighting and clean-lined architectural elements creates a balanced aesthetic that bridges historical and modern design.

Maintenance involves regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of high-quality leather cream or saddle soap to prevent drying and cracking, while avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources.
