The cheval mirror, a large freestanding mirror designed to display the full figure, emerged in France during the late 18th century before gaining widespread popularity in Britain during the Regency and Georgian periods.

These mirrors are typically constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, heavy brass pivoting hardware, and hand-silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct timber grain, hand-beveled or uneven glass with natural foxing, original brass swivels, and traditional hand-cut joinery without modern fixings.

Position the piece to reflect natural light and create depth in a dressing room, hallway, or bedroom, pairing its rich wood tones with neutral walls and contemporary textiles for contrast.

Maintain the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, dusting the wood with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the antique frame and silvered glass.
