Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-e-Qalamdani, is a traditional handicraft that involves pulping paper, moulding it, and intricately hand-painting the surface. The technique was introduced to Kashmir in the 15th century by the saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani from Persia.

Authentic pieces are crafted from compressed paper pulp or layered paper waste bonded with natural adhesives, then coated with a plaster base called zarin. They are meticulously painted with mineral and vegetable pigments before being sealed with a protective varnish.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit fine, hand-ground mineral pigments that have mellowed over time, often showing subtle craquelure, wear, and a dense, weighty feel compared to lightweight modern tourist souvenirs.

This piece works well as a tactile accent on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece, adding a layer of global texture and historical depth to maximalist or eclectic schemes.

Keep papier-mache objects away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the paint from fading and the paper substrate from warping. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical cleaning agents.
