Description

A mid 19th century tub back armchair by Howard & Sons - London. Raised on turned walnut front legs with splayed rear legs and all with the original Cope & Collinson brass casters. C1840

Provenance. Powderham Castle, Devon - England. Home to the Earl of Devon.

The chair retains its original buttoned innards and also the original seat fillings. It also retains its original H&S printed lining.

For restoration and upholstery.

The chair will be restored by us included in the price of the item before we send it off for upholstery. The upholstery cost is not included.

The restoration needed is a new turned front left leg and a new rear right leg along with the right side seat rail and front seat rail. All of which have been affected by worm. The chair sits well and its more of a precaution as the affected pieces are just on the wrong side of restoration and we feel its well worth saving such a good chair by a good maker from such a prestigious location.

34cm seat height

Date of Manufacture

Desired Effect Antiques Ltd has dated this Howard and Sons Armchair to the Victorian era.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Howard and Sons armchairs are characterised by deep, sprung comfort, low profiles, and signature tapered wooden legs fitted with brass castors, often bearing stamped markings on the castors and rear legs.

These pieces were typically built using sturdy beech frames, traditional coil springs, horsehair stuffing, hessian webbing, and high-quality cotton or damask upholstery fabrics.

Authenticity is generally verified by checking for stamped brass castors, serial numbers stamped on the frame or legs, and distinctive traditional upholstery techniques such as layered horsehair stuffing.

An antique armchair provides textural contrast in a contemporary space when paired with minimalist architecture, neutral walls, or modern side tables to let the heritage piece stand out.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming with a low-suction attachment, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and consulting a specialist conservator for traditional reupholstery or frame repairs.
