Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Painted date of 1796 in the upper roundel: fixes the period.
Softwood boards with pin and peg joints: early provincial construction.
Hand-painted floral sprays over dark green ground: typical Frisian work.
Natural paint wear through to bare timber on exposed corners: age.
Period handwritten calling card: early Dutch aristocratic provenance.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This rare 18th-century doll chair follows the Dutch Hindeloopen style, dated 1796. The piece uses painted wood and iron hardware, presenting a muted green finish with polychrome hand-painted floral scrolls, floral motifs, and a scrolled backboard crest. A calligraphy monogram and the date 1796 appear on the upper backboard, while the lower portion contains an enclosed cupboard base with small metal hinges, standing on small bracket feet with visible surface wear and original patination throughout. Measuring 63.5 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, the chair works well as a decorative display object on a sideboard top in a rustic farmhouse interior. Collectors can place it on a tabletop or cabinet surface to showcase its traditional folk art motifs.

Hindeloopen style furniture originated in the maritime town of Hindeloopen in the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries. It is defined by distinctive hand-painted polychrome decoration featuring floral tendrils, motifs, and decorative cartouches, heavily influenced by Scandinavian and Asian trade imports.

These items were predominantly constructed from regional softwoods such as pine or lime wood, which provided a smooth surface for painting. They were finished with oil-based pigments and sealed with varnish, featuring hand-wrought iron hinges or latches.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including paint crazing, oxidisation of pigments, and wear consistent with handling along edges and handles. Construction details such as hand-cut joinery, square-headed iron nails, and period-specific painted dates also help establish authenticity.

Miniature painted furniture acts as an architectural accent piece when placed on elevated surfaces such as mantels, sideboards, or bookshelf niches. It adds texture, historical narrative, and colour contrast within contemporary or eclectic room schemes.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, liquid chemical polish, or commercial solvents, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood warping and paint flaking.
