FAQs

Victorian sideboards gained popularity during the 19th century as dining room centerpieces used for serving food and displaying silverware, with mirrored backs introduced to reflect candlelight and brighten formal dining spaces.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary woods, featuring hand-carved decorative motifs, dovetail joinery, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional hand-carved ornamentation, original hardware or appropriate replacements, and natural ageing characteristics in the wood and mirror silvering.

A Victorian sideboard can ground a contemporary dining room or open-plan living area when paired with minimalist modern art, simple ceramics, or clean-lined seating to create a balanced eclectic aesthetic.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying professional beeswax to nourish the wood.
