19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century Regency sideboard in mahogany, a neat and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and classic period design in a compact size.

The sideboard is fitted with a shallow central drawer above an arched kneehole, flanked by two deep drawers, all with turned mahogany knob handles and brass-lined keyholes.

The kneehole arch is framed by finely carved fan spandrels, and the drawers are set within a moulded frame below the reeded top edge. The sides are panelled, and it stands on elegant ring-turned tapering legs. The back is made from pine boards in the traditional manner.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain with a warm, rich colour and a beautiful aged patina, with especially attractive figure to the top and sides.

Presented in good condition for its age, a very desirable small sideboard, perfect for a dining room, hallway or kitchen where space is at a premium, and equally useful as a serving table.

This Regency small sideboard is made from mahogany with a dark brown, warm, rich colour, figured grain, and flame mahogany veneer. The piece is 94 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 50.5 cm deep. It has a shallow central drawer above an arched kneehole, flanked by two deep drawers, all fitted with turned mahogany knob handles and brass-lined keyholes. The kneehole arch includes finely carved fan spandrels, and the drawers sit within a moulded frame below a reeded top edge. The sideboard stands on ring-turned tapering legs. In a contemporary home, this compact item works well in a dining room, hallway, or kitchen, functioning practically as a side table or serving surface where floor space is limited. The construction incorporates cockbeaded drawer fronts, panelled sides, and traditional pine boards at the back.

Regency period furniture, produced in Britain from roughly 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical symmetry, clean geometric forms, and fine wood veneers such as mahogany or rosewood, often incorporating architectural details inspired by classical antiquity.

These pieces typically utilise high-grade solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcass frames. Construction methods feature hand-cut dovetail joints, period lock mechanisms, and turned timber or brass turned knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed secondary timbers, hand-sawn dovetail joints, period lock plates, and natural wear patterns around drawer runners and leg bases. Features such as fan-carved spandrels and turned, tapered legs are characteristic design details of the period.

A compact Regency sideboard functions effectively as a hallway console table, home office writing desk, or dining room server. Contrast the rich reddish-brown tone of polished mahogany against neutral wall paint, modern lighting, or contemporary artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly. Avoid placement near direct heat sources, radiators, or direct sunlight to prevent veneer lifting and colour alteration.
