Large Edwardian Adam Revival Mahogany Breakfront Sideboard Paw Feet

1900 - 1920
Description

DESCRIPTION

A substantial and impressive early 20th-century mahogany twin-pedestal sideboard in the Adam Revival manner, of unusually generous proportions and with particularly attractive carved neoclassical decoration.

The long breakfront top is surmounted by a raised half-gallery and sits above an arrangement of drawers, including a projecting central drawer. The drawer fronts are decorated with carved floral and scrolling ornament, complemented by reeded detailing and beaded mouldings.

The two pedestal cupboards are each centred by a large panelled door richly decorated with carved neoclassical swags, ribbons and paterae. The whole is raised on boldly carved paw feet, giving the sideboard a particularly strong and architectural appearance.

The mahogany has developed an attractive deep colour and the restrained Adam Revival ornament gives the piece considerably more character than a conventional pedestal sideboard of the period.

A handsome statement piece offering substantial storage and particularly well suited to a large dining room, entrance hall or period interior.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 111 cm

Width: 223 cm

Depth: 70 cm

CONDITION

The sideboard is in good, honest condition overall, with marks, knocks, scratches and wear commensurate with age and use.

There is a noticeable gouge to the top surface, together with the usual minor surface marks and wear associated with a piece of this age. The carved decoration and overall appearance remain very attractive.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Adam Revival furniture originated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawing inspiration from the eighteenth-century neoclassical designs of architect Robert Adam. The style incorporates classical Greek and Roman ornamentation, such as urns, swags, husk garlands, and oval paterae, rendered in dark woods like mahogany.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak frame construction. Drawers are built with hand-cut or fine machine dovetail joints, accompanied by carved decorative panels, cast brass hardware, and hand-carved legs or paw feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit construction traits typical of the late Victorian to Edwardian period, including secondary woods like oak or pine inside drawer linings, precise joinery, natural timber oxidation, and hand-carved decorative motifs rather than modern moulded resin accents.

To integrate a heavy mahogany sideboard into modern interiors, position it against neutral or muted painted walls to contrast the dark wood tone. Balance the traditional silhouette by placing contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramics, or modern table lamps on the top surface.

Maintain the surface finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing in the direction of the wood grain, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or fading.
