The captains chair evolved from traditional Windsor chair designs in Britain and America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, characterised by a low wooden back and continuous armrest.

These chairs typically feature a combination of native hardwoods such as elm for the carved seat, ash or oak for the bentwood arms and spindles, and turned legs joined by stretchers.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned spindles, traditional wedged mortise and tenon joints, natural wear patterns, and the characteristic patination of aged timber.

The chair can be incorporated as a functional desk seat or paired with a contemporary dining table to create a contrasting focal point that highlights historical craftsmanship.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wooden surface.
