Seventeenth-century table boxes were primarily used for storing valuable documents, Bibles, and personal items in domestic households before the widespread use of fitted drawers.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid English oak using hand- cleft boards, butt or mitred joints secured with wooden pegs (trunnels), and often featured wrought iron hardware.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved motifs, original forged iron hinges and lock plates, traditional tool marks such as adze or pit-saw striations, and dry, oxidized surface patination.

An antique table box functions effectively as a decorative accent on a console table, sideboard, or desk, adding textural contrast and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood without sealing the surface.
