A whist box is a small, purpose-built container used in the 18th and 19th centuries to hold scoring counters or markers for the popular card game whist. These boxes were often crafted from bone, ivory, or precious woods to sit on parlour tables during social card evenings.

These items were typically hand-carved from bovine bone or ivory on a lathe, featuring fitted lids and hand-inked or engraved numbering and floral motifs. The accompanying counters were precision-turned as thin discs to fit neatly within the cylindrical enclosure.

Authenticity is identified through material patination, visible tool marks from manual lathe turning, period-appropriate hand-lettering styles, and natural ageing characteristics such as fine hairline cracks or yellowing of the bone.

These small collectable items can be displayed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or desk within a glass cloche or small tray, adding a layer of historical curiosity and textural interest to a room.

Antique bone requires stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or moisture.
