A Louis Philippe mirror originates from the mid-19th-century French reign of King Louis Philippe, characterised by understated elegance, rounded top corners, and simple moulded frames that bridge neoclassical and Victorian design.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden frames, often gessoed and painted or gilded, fitted with mercury glass or early silvered float glass plates secured with pegged backboards.

Authenticity is indicated by heavy, old wooden backboards, hand-beveled or uneven glass with natural oxidisation, hand-forged hardware, and construction methods consistent with mid-19th-century French joinery.

Leaning a large mirror casually against a living room or bedroom wall creates a relaxed yet sophisticated focal point, reflecting light and adding depth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve the frame and glass by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, dusting gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to protect the silvering.
