Description

A smart and very well made pair of antique mahogany and leather carver armchairs. They were made in England, and date from around the 1900-1910 period.

They are beautifully made and are of very fine quality. The pierced backs have lovely intricate carving with a wheat sheaf design, they sit on tapered legs with H stretcher bases. The leather upholstery has a beautiful patina, having just been revived by our leather restorer.

We have had these recently re-polished, they are in excellent condition for their age with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shield-back chair designs gained prominence during the late 18th century, largely popularised by prominent English cabinet makers who favoured neoclassical motifs such as tapered legs and carved splats.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, and upholstered with vegetable-tanned leather secured by brass tacks.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joinery, timber patination showing age, traditional hand-stitched upholstery techniques, and subtle irregularities indicative of manual woodworking tools.

Pairing antique wooden carvers with a minimalist modern dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights the rich timber tones and textual depth of the leather.

Maintain the timber with microcrystalline wax and nourish the leather periodically using specialist leather balms, keeping the items away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
