A very pretty Victorian occasional chair, circa 1880, with shell shaped back and serpentine front sprung seat with carved and shaped front rail and raised on foliate carved mahgany support terminating in original brass castors.

In good structural condition, currently upholstered in gold damask which although clean would benefit from being replaced as the seat fabric is a little loose. I can arrange upholstery and supply fabric if required - please contact me for details.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian seating is characterised by ornate carvings, heavily padded upholstery, and a focus on comfort combined with formal elegance, drawing inspiration from various historical revivals.

These chairs typically featured sturdy hardwood frames made from mahogany, walnut, or oak, paired with horsehair stuffing, coil springs, and elaborate silk, damask, or velvet fabric coverings.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery methods, hand-carved wooden details, aged patina on the wood, and period-appropriate upholstery techniques such as hand-tack framing and traditional stuffing materials.

Pair this piece with minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a striking focal point, allowing the historic craftsmanship and sculptural silhouette to contrast effectively against clean architectural lines.

Protect the fabric from direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently using a low-suction attachment, and condition the exposed wooden elements periodically with appropriate furniture wax.
