FAQs

Shoe and slipper-shaped snuff boxes gained popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries as pocket-sized novelty containers for tobacco snuff, often given as tokens of affection or tokens of travel.

These items were typically handcrafted from dense hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, or mahogany, frequently accented with brass wire inlay, brass pins, or metal shields.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, uniform surface patina from pocket wear, and ingenious concealed sliding mechanisms or puzzle joints.

Display the item on a stack of art books, inside a glass display cabinet, or on a mantelpiece to highlight its sculptural form and historical craftsmanship.

Maintain stable indoor humidity away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally feed the timber with microcrystalline wax to preserve the historic finish.
