Black Forest woodcarvings originated in the Brienz region of Switzerland during the 19th century, becoming a major export for tourists visiting Europe during the Victorian era.

These pieces were typically carved from native European hardwoods such as lime or linden, often featuring applied glass eyes and hand-chased surface details to simulate animal fur.

Authentic pieces exhibit deep, deliberate hand-tool marks, natural ageing of the wood, and high-quality amber glass eyes rather than modern plastic or machine-moulded components.

This item functions as a striking decorative object on a desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, adding organic texture and historical interest to contemporary or eclectic spaces.

Dust the item gently with a soft, dry brush and occasionally apply a neutral microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without damaging the original patina.
