FAQs

George II mirrors are characterised by architectural symmetry, heavy use of walnut veneers, parcel gilding, and ornate carved crestings featuring motifs like scrollwork and foliage.

These pieces typically utilised secondary softwoods like pine or oak for the underlying frame, faced with figured walnut veneers, gilded gesso details, and hand-silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces often exhibit foxing, oxidisation, and slight irregularities in the mirror glass, alongside hand-cut joinery, old pine backboards, and traditional water gilding techniques on gesso.

Pairing an ornate historic mirror with modern, minimalist furniture creates a striking focal point, reflecting natural light while grounding the room with historical texture.

Dust the carved frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners, using only a lightly damp cloth on the glass while ensuring moisture does not seep into the antique silvering.
