This Meiji period Japanese Shodona cabinet on stand uses dark brown hardwood with a polished wood finish and multi-panel lacquer landscape inlays. The tall display piece stands 163 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 29 cm deep. A pierced foliate and long-tailed bird carving surmounts the top, above intricately pierced fretwork friezes, asymmetrical shelving, sliding and hinged cupboard doors, and multiple drawers. The dark timber cabinet rests on carved scroll feet. In a contemporary home, this decorative display cabinet provides statement storage in a principal living room, hallway, or study. The multi-tiered surfaces and enclosed compartments hold books, ceramics, and small decorative items while adding an elaborate decorative focal point to the interior space.

A Shodona is a traditional Japanese display cabinet constructed with asymmetrical shelves, cupboards, and drawers, which gained popularity during the Meiji period (18681912) both for domestic use and export to Western markets.

These pieces are typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as keyaki or rosewood, incorporating pierced openwork panels, sliding doors decorated with maki-e lacquer, and mother-of-pearl or bone inlays.

Authentic Meiji period examples display hand-carved joinery, multi-layered urushi lacquer work, and complex reticulated relief carving rather than modern machine-moulded components.

A Shodona cabinet functions as a focal statement piece in a hallway or living space, pairing well with minimalist decor or curated eclectic arrangements where its architectural silhouette provides visual depth.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent wood movement or lacquer cracking; dust gently using a soft dry microfibre cloth and avoid solvent-based polishes.
