Slipware and earthenware pottery have a long history in Britain, dating back centuries, characterised by the application of liquid clay slip onto a body before firing, often producing rich brown and cream glazes.

These items were typically thrown on a wheel or hand-modelled from local red clay, finished with a lead glaze, and fired in traditional kilns, often featuring applied motifs and slip-trailed inscriptions.

Authenticity is evaluated through examining the glaze characteristics, crazing patterns, wear consistent with age, potting marks, and the chemical composition of the clay body under magnification.

Antique pottery can be integrated into contemporary spaces by placing pieces on open shelving, mantelpieces, or side tables as focal sculptural elements that add texture and historical depth.

Historic earthenware should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaned only with a dry or very slightly damp soft cloth, and handled with clean hands to protect the porous ceramic body.
