Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670. This mechanical advancement allowed for a much narrower pendulum swing, necessitating tall, narrow wooden cases to enclose the weights and pendulum safely.

Traditional longcase clocks are primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood, often featuring fine veneers and marquetry. The movements are traditionally made of brass and steel components, assembled by hand with gear trains driven by hanging weights or springs.

Authentic antique longcase clocks can be identified by examining the movement for hand-cut or hand-finished gear teeth, matching maker signatures on the dial to historical records, and checking the timber for age-related wear, hand-cut dovetails, and period-appropriate joinery in the case construction.

A grandfather clock serves as a striking architectural focal point in a contemporary space when placed against a neutral wall to highlight its vertical lines and timber grain. Pairing it with minimalist surrounding decor allows the traditional craftsmanship to stand out as a statement piece.

Preserving an antique clock involves keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from rapid temperature or humidity fluctuations, which can warp the timber or affect the movement. Professional servicing every three to five years is essential to clean, oil, and maintain the mechanical integrity of the gears.
