FAQs

Victorian furniture design spans the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), encompassing various revivals such as Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo. Characteristics typically include dark woods like mahogany or walnut, curved lines, and intricate hand-carved detailing.

Victorian dining chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Construction often involved mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned legs, and traditional upholstery techniques using horsehair and webbing over coil springs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the wood grain, patina, joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails or traditional pegging, and the type of screws or fasteners used. Age-appropriate wear, hand-carved nuances, and traditional secondary woods underneath also indicate period manufacture.

Pairing antique dark wood chairs with a sleek, contemporary dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the chairs. Mixing historical seating with modern minimalist architecture adds depth, texture, and character to a dining space.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking. Apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the timber, and avoid using modern silicone-based polishes.
