Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian furniture encompasses styles produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, spanning from 1837 to 1901. It is characterised by a revival of historicism, incorporating Rococo, Gothic, and Elizabethan influences with a focus on substantial construction and ornate carved details.

Victorian seating was predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak. Frames were typically joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and seats were traditionally stuffed with horsehair or coir before being upholstered in fabrics like velvet, damask, or striped silk.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit the deep patina and oxidation expected of nineteenth-century timber. Inspection of the underside often reveals hand-cut screws, traditional joinery without modern staples, and wear patterns consistent with age and hand-finishing.

Antique dining chairs can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing them with a minimalist glass or modern timber dining table to create an eclectic contrast. Alternatively, keeping the upholstery in a neutral, textured fabric allows the historic woodwork to serve as a sophisticated focal point without overwhelming the room.

Preservation requires keeping wooden furniture away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent timber splitting. Surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally treated with traditional beeswax, avoiding silicone-based polishes.
