This Edwardian dumb waiter stands from the period around 1900, constructed from warm brown cherry wood with a circular marble top fitted with a pierced brass gallery. Three pentagonal shelves sit below the top surface, each featuring a raised moulded edge and supported by turned columns that have slight tapering and collar details at the top and bottom. The framework rests upon low pad feet, displaying some wear to the finish on the shelves alongside filled old woodworm holes as part of the wood's condition. The piece measures 122 cm high, 53.5 cm in diameter, and 53.5 cm deep overall. Practical placement includes an empty corner of a living space for holding drinks or in a bathroom for organizing towels, shampoos, and soaps. The upright tiered design provides multiple display surfaces within a minimal floor footprint while maintaining a traditional English country house aesthetic. Maintenance includes regular cleaning and waxing to preserve the polished timber surfaces and the bright metal gallery surrounding the upper edge.

Originating in the eighteenth century and widely produced through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a dumb waiter is a tiered piece of moveable dining room furniture designed to hold side dishes, condiments, and plates, allowing diners to serve themselves without servants present.

Turn-of-the-century dumb waiters were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as polished mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently accented with pierced brass galleries and inlaid marble or timber tops.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, authentic patinated brass or gilt metal galleries, natural wear along the wooden uprights, and original marble inserts showing hand-chiselled undersides or age-appropriate surface micro-scratching.

In contemporary spaces, a tiered dumb waiter serves as a functional drinks trolley, a pedestal for displaying potted house plants, or a slim occasional stand that adds historical texture and verticality to tight corners.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along grain lines, while cleaning marble surfaces immediately with pH-neutral stone cleaner to prevent staining from liquids.
