Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Wheelback chairs emerged in England during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from the traditional Windsor chair tradition. The distinctive carved wheel motif in the splat became particularly popular in Thames Valley and West Country workshops.

These chairs typically utilise a combination of native timbers, featuring elm for the sculpted seats due to its resistance to splitting, ash or beech for the bentwood bows and spindles, and fruitwood or oak for the legs and central splats.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-turned spindles, wedged tenon joints visible through the seat, distinct adze marks on the saddle seats, and natural patina resulting from decades of use and waxing.

Pairing these traditional chairs with a contemporary dining table creates a balanced juxtaposition of textures. The organic grain and warm timber tones add depth and character to minimalist or transitional dining spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage. Apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface and buff gently with a soft cloth.
