Tunbridge ware is a distinct type of wooden mosaic decoration produced predominantly in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the 18th and 19th centuries, featuring complex pictorial and geometric designs made from thousands of tiny tinted wood blocks.

Items are constructed using a vast array of naturally coloured British and foreign woods, such as holly, beech, and mahogany, assembled in strips and sliced transversely to form microscopic mosaic tiles.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit extreme precision in the mosaic work, often featuring a signature tessellated border, a sliding or hinged lid, and occasionally a manufacturers label from notable makers like Thomas Barton or Edmund Nye on the interior.

Place the box on a contrasting plain surface such as a marble mantelpiece or a contemporary dark wood console table to highlight the intricate mosaic detailing without visual competition.

Keep wooden mosaic pieces out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the tinted woods, maintain stable indoor humidity to avoid warping, and dust gently with a dry, soft lint-free cloth without using liquid polishes.
