FAQs

A snuff shoe is a small, pocket-sized container fashioned in the shape of a shoe, traditionally used to hold powdered tobacco or snuff during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These items were typically hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, or walnut, often featuring sliding lids and intricate incised detailing.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved tool marks, genuine historic patina, natural wear appropriate to age, and traditional construction methods such as hand-fitted sliding lids.

Small antique objects add texture and historical interest when displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or coffee table as part of a curated tablescape.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly only when necessary, and avoiding water or chemical cleaners.
