Description

A fine quality Victorian papier mache tea caddy featuring a painted scene of Derwent Water in the Lake District. The tea caddy is of exaggerated sarcophagus form with a wide splayed base curving into a slender middle and topped with a cushion shaped lid. The piece is typically decorated with swags and flowers heightened with wonderful gilding. The lid is hand painted with an exquisite landscape scene of Derwent Water and is one of the best such scenes you will see on papier mache. The interior of the box is black in colour with mother of pearl handles to the tea compartments. The whole is in good condition with light general wear and rubbing to the decoration and there has been some very good restoration to the hinges area on the back of the caddy. Victorian papier-mache objects gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly in manufacturing centres like Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where layered paper pulp was pressed, dried, and hardened to create durable articles.

These pieces were typically constructed from layers of paper pulp mixed with glue and resin, pressed in iron moulds, then finished with multiple coats of dark lacquer and hand-painted or inlaid ornamentation.

Authenticity is generally identified by the density and weight of the hardened core, fine surface craquelure, hand-painted details, and often makers stamps or patent marks stamped on the interior.

This piece can be placed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or mantelpiece to introduce historical texture, dark contrasting tones, and a touch of classical craftsmanship into a contemporary scheme.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding all water or liquid cleaning agents to protect the delicate lacquer finish.
