Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components like spindles and legs were turned on a lathe and fitted into a solid wooden seat.

Authentic period Windsor chairs typically combine multiple timber types for structural integrity, frequently featuring elm or ash for the carved seats, ash or beech for the bentwood bows and spindles, and fruitwood or beech for the turned legs.

Authentication involves examining construction methods for hand-turned components, wedge-tenon joints piercing the seat, natural wear patterns, and the characteristic patina and oxidisation accumulated over decades of use.

These versatile pieces function effectively as dining seating around a refectory table or as standalone accent pieces in a living space, contrasting clean modern lines with traditional craftsmanship and warm timber tones.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, alongside occasional application of microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic timber surface.
