This Victorian sewing box dates from 1860 in the English Country House style. The piece uses figured walnut veneer and brass, showing warm brown timber colours with a rich grain pattern, a flush rectangular brass handle set into the top lid, a front brass keyhole escutcheon, and an inserted metal key. The box has a hinged lid, a drop-down front opening to a storage drawer, and a stepped base moulding. It measures 16 cm high, 31.5 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a sideboard top in a living room, study, or bedroom, the box serves as a decorative storage container for small sewing implements, trinkets, or keepsakes. The piece operates via the top handle for lifting the lid and the front keyhole for accessing the lower drawer mechanism.

In the 19th century, sewing boxes, or workboxes, were standard domestic items in middle and upper-class households. They served both a practical purpose for needlework storage and a status purpose, frequently crafted from prized timbers to display in drawing rooms.

Victorian workboxes were commonly constructed using solid timbers veneered with decorative woods such as figured walnut, rosewood, or mahogany. Hardware typically consisted of brass hinges, flush handles, and decorative escutcheons.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally show signs of natural age and patina on the wood finish and metal fittings. Key features include hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct steel or brass locks, and authentic wear around the keyhole and hinges.

A Victorian workbox functions as decorative tabletop storage in modern settings. Position it on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf to store small items like stationery, keys, or jewellery while adding historical character to the space.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes to prevent veneer warping or splitting. Clean gently with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the moisture and lustre of the timber.
