Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The French gilt style typically features carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf or gilt gesso, often incorporating elaborate scrollwork, floral motifs, and classical proportions inspired by periods such as Louis XV and Louis XVI.

Authentic pieces are traditionally constructed from pine, oak, or fruitwood substrates, meticulously hand-carved, and finished with layers of gesso and gold leaf. The glass is often mercury or early silvered plate with bevelled edges.

Authentication involves examining the backboards for age and tool marks, inspecting the silvering of the glass for oxidisation and foxing, and verifying that the gesso shows genuine craquelure and wear consistent with age rather than artificial ageing.

A large gilt mirror can be leaned casually against a living room or bedroom wall to reflect light and create a sense of space, contrasting traditional ornamentation with modern minimalist furniture.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid all moisture, chemical solvents, or commercial cleaners, which can permanently strip the gold leaf.
