The George II period spans from 1727 to 1760 and is characterised by a transition from heavy baroque influences to lighter, more ornate rococo and palladian forms, frequently featuring architectural elements and rich veneers like walnut.

These pieces typically utilised a softwood or pine carcass veneered with figured walnut, complemented by hand-carved and gilded gesso details, and fitted with mercury silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut joinery, old growth timber shrinkage, oxidisation and foxing on the original mercury mirror plate, and hand-applied gesso over carved wooden details.

An antique mirror serves as a strong focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or console table, adding historical texture and reflective light that contrasts effectively with modern minimalist spaces.

Preserve these items by keeping them away from direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical polishes on both the fragile gilt surfaces and old glass.
