FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung above a fireplace mantel to reflect candlelight and amplify natural light within formal reception rooms.

Authentic period mirrors are typically constructed from carved softwoods such as pine or gesso-coated timber, finished with a layer of thin gold leaf applied over a bole base.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the aged patina of the gilt finish, hand-carved tool marks, foxing or silver oxidation on the glass plate, and the construction of the wooden backboards and fixings.

To integrate this piece into a modern interior, position it above a minimalist fireplace or lean it against a living room wall to create a striking focal point that contrasts ornate craftsmanship with clean lines.

Giltwood requires delicate maintenance; surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive materials that could strip the delicate gold leaf.
