This nineteenth-century Empire Revival pier mirror is constructed from warm brown mahogany with gilded brass capitals and clear glass. The architectural cornice top has a crescent-shaped pediment showcasing flame mahogany veneer, and the central two-part mirror is flanked by full-round turned columns resting on square plinths. Visible details include minor plate loss on the glass, minor surface marks on the woodwork, and minor crazing to the veneer. The item measures 163 cm high, 72.3 cm wide, and 15.8 cm deep. Ideal for use in a hallway or cloakroom, the mirror can be placed on a narrow wall space either floor-standing or suspended. It provides a grand Regency aesthetic suitable for traditional or classic interior settings.

Empire Revival style originated in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, drawing direct design inspiration from Napoleons First French Empire period. It is characterized by grand architectural proportions, rich mahogany veneers, classical columns, pediments, and gilded bronze or brass accents.

Nineteenth-century pier mirrors were typically crafted using solid timber bases clad in highly patterned flame mahogany veneers. The mirror plates were made of silvered glass, framed by turned columns often featuring cast or chassed gilded metal capitals.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-cut dovetails on back framing, secondary woods like pine or oak behind the veneers, and gentle oxidisation or foxing on the original silvered mirror plate.

Place the mirror in a narrow hallway, between two tall windows, or above a low console table to maximize light refraction and establish vertical depth within the space.

Dust the timber frame using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply high-grade microcrystalline wax annually to protect the veneer. Clean the glass with a mild, ammonia-free solution applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the mirror frame.
