FAQs

Tile back chairs gained popularity during the late Victorian period, heavily influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts philosophy. Incorporating ceramic tiles, often manufactured by notable potteries like Minton, added a splash of colour and artistic flair to functional hallway furniture.

These chairs were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joints. The ceramic tiles were securely set into the wooden backrest, often framed by carved mouldings or turned spindles.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved details, and genuine ceramic tiles bearing makers marks on the reverse side. Patina on the wood from decades of use and period-specific screw types also help confirm authenticity.

This type of chair functions well as an accent piece in a minimalist or eclectic hallway, acting as a sculptural focal point. Its mix of wood and ceramic texture contrasts sharply against plain white walls or alongside contemporary furnishings.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Protect the ceramic tile insert from impact and clean it gently with a dry or barely damp microfibre cloth.
