How do I clean a gilded frame?

Dust it lightly with a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush. Never use damp cloths on water gilding. Water dissolves the underlying gesso layer instantly. Once that washes away, you lose the gold leaf and expose the bare wood beneath.

I inherited a set of dining chairs that seem to have very low seats compared to modern dining tables. Was people's height really that different back then, or is there another reason for this?

It is also common for the legs to have lost height over the decades. Continued dragging across uneven floors grinds away the bottom of the feet. The webbing underneath the seat of my armchair has started to sag badly and small bits of dry grass are falling out onto the floor. Can this be fixed without replacing the old tapestry cover?
