This nineteenth-century English Gothic Revival armchair is solid oak with a warm brown finish and beige striped textile upholstery. The high back incorporates a pointed arch with traditional Gothic arches, framed by uprights topped with small finials. Inset padded armrests rest upon barley twist supports that match the front legs, while the rear legs are outswept as an extension of the frame. Small brass castors are fitted to the base of the front legs. The upholstery is patterned with vertical stripes in pale tones. Measuring 120 cm high, 68 cm wide and 66 cm deep, the chair provides generous proportions for seating. In a modern interior, this piece serves well as a desk chair or a reading chair in a study, library or living room. The carved details and turned woodwork bring period character to traditional or eclectic spaces, while the upholstered seat, back and arms offer comfortable support during use. The combination of oak timber and textile upholstery creates a practical seating option for everyday tasks.

Gothic Revival furniture from the 19th century draws design elements from medieval architecture, featuring pointed arches, lancet tracery, turned finials, and heavy timber construction, primarily using dark oak or walnut.

These chairs were typically constructed from solid oak with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, featuring hand-carved details, barley twist columns, brass castors, and woven textile or leather upholstery.

Authentic period examples exhibit genuine signs of historical wear, hand-carved decorative elements, original brass hardware, and natural timber oxidisation around joints rather than modern uniform finishing.

A Gothic Revival armchair functions as a structural focal point when placed in a hallway, home library, or office, contrasting with contemporary plain walls or complementing dark, textured paint palettes.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth, applying high-quality beeswax, and vacuuming fabric upholstery on low suction.
