FAQs

Italian giltwood mirrors gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods, crafted by master artisans in regions like Venice, Florence, and Rome, where intricate wood carving was combined with delicate gold leaf application to project opulence and status.

These pieces typically feature a carved timber base, often softwoods such as pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso and bole before the application of thin gold leaf sheets, finished with hand-burnishing to achieve a luminous sheen.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved tool marks, genuine age-related oxidisation on the mercury or silvered glass plates, crazing in the gesso layers, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern resin moulds or uniform machine finishes.

Placing an ornate giltwood mirror against a minimalist, neutral wall or juxtaposing it with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a striking focal point, balancing historical grandeur with modern simplicity.

Giltwood requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any moisture, chemical cleaners, or direct sunlight to prevent the fragile gold leaf and underlying gesso from flaking or degrading over time.
