Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian drapers counter serves as a shop counter in the classic style. The base is constructed from painted pine finished in an off-white colour with visible distressing and wear, paired with a dark polished mahogany top surface formed from a single plank. Distinctive details include five recessed front panels, carved decorative corbels positioned above each partition, and a substantial plinth base running along the floor. Additional elements visible on the structure comprise a brass rule embedded in the wooden top and natural weathering marks across the painted surfaces. The item measures 81.5 cm high, 363.5 cm wide, and 66.5 cm deep. In a contemporary domestic setting, this piece functions practically as a kitchen island, a generous serving table, or a large storage console in a spacious hallway or living area, providing an expansive surface for everyday use and display.

FAQs

A Victorian drapers counter is a long piece of commercial furniture originally designed for nineteenth-century dry goods and haberdashery shops to measure, cut, and present fabrics to customers.

These counters were typically constructed from pine or fir softwoods, finished with recessed panelled fronts, plinth bases, and topped with polished hardwoods such as mahogany or pitch pine.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative corbels, historic wear patterns along the base and working surface, traditional joinery techniques, and layered historical paint finishes.

These expansive counters are frequently repurposed as freestanding kitchen islands, dramatic room dividers in open-plan spaces, or functional serving counters in retail and hospitality environments.

Maintain the painted finish by wiping gently with a soft damp cloth, avoiding harsh detergents, and apply clear wax to the timber counter top to preserve the original patina.
