Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, traditionally characterised by a distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron red, with additional highlights in gold. The style originated in the early 17th century during the Edo period and gained immense popularity across Europe through trade by the Dutch East India Company.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired hard-paste porcelain clay, shaped either on a potters wheel or via moulds. The decoration involves manual painting using mineral pigments, specifically cobalt oxide for blue and iron-rich compounds for red, often supplemented with gilt detailing before undergoing secondary kiln firing.

Authentic pieces from the 19th century typically feature heavier, denser porcelain bodies with subtle imperfections consistent with hand-craftsmanship. Examination of the glaze often reveals micro-abrasions, slight firing stilt marks on the base, and characteristic hand-painted brushwork rather than mechanical transfer printing.

These vases serve as striking focal points when displayed symmetrically on mantelsides, console tables, or open shelving. Their bold colour palette complements neutral backdrops or adds a layer of curated global heritage to eclectic and transitional interior designs.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned exclusively by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads. Display areas ought to be located away from direct sunlight and areas subject to sudden temperature fluctuations to protect the integrity of the glaze and pigments.
