FAQs

Brass-framed display counters became prominent in retail environments during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, designed to showcase luxury goods, jewellery, and specimens with maximum visibility while offering security.

These pieces typically combine structural frames of cast or extruded brass with timber bases, often featuring mahogany, oak, or parquet flooring, enclosed by clear plate glass panels.

Authentication involves examining the joinery, the presence of hand-rolled sheet glass with minor imperfections, patination on the brass components, and traditional construction methods typical of early 20th-century cabinet making.

Such cabinets serve as functional focal points in living spaces or home studies for exhibiting curated collections of curiosities, ceramics, or books, contrasting cleanly with modern minimalist furniture.

Preservation requires dusting the glass with non-abrasive cleaners and maintaining the brass finish without harsh chemical polishes to preserve the natural oxidisation and historical patina.
