FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative looking-glass traditionally designed to hang or stand on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, popularised during the 19th century for reflecting light and adding grandeur to principal rooms.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often incorporating hand-carved fretwork, turned spindles, integrated small shelves, and bevelled glass plates secured with traditional backing boards.

Authenticity is determined by examining the wood grain, hand-cut joinery, the presence of mercury or early silvering oxidation on the glass plate, and period-appropriate hardware and fixings on the reverse.

Positioning the mirror above a functional or decorative fireplace anchors the room, while pairing it with minimalist contemporary furnishings creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern simplicity.

Maintain the frame with micro-crystalline wax to nourish the wood, avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the glass to protect the antique silvering, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
