Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinoiserie display cabinet dates from 1930 and is constructed from painted wood, glass and mirror in a cream colourway. The upper section features a decorative pagoda-style roof topped with a small finial, sitting above a pair of glass doors with diamond lattice glazing bars. Inside, a shelf is visible against a mirrored back. The lower stand incorporates fretted detailing, a shaped stretcher supporting a central carved finial, and four upright supports with faux bamboo moulding, finishing in bold carved leaf feet. The entire piece measures 201 cm high, 97 cm wide and 46 cm deep. This decorative standing cabinet functions as a focal display unit in a reception room, hallway or study, providing storage for glassware, ceramics or small decorative objects behind glass doors while adding architectural interest to an interior.

FAQs

Chinoiserie furniture represents European interpretations of East Asian artistic traditions, gaining prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries. Key characteristics include pagoda silhouettes, faux bamboo structural details, decorative lattice fretwork, and hand-painted or lacquered surfaces.

These pieces are typically constructed from native hardwoods or softwoods that are prepared with gesso and finished in paint or lacquer. Glazed cabinet doors utilise individual glass panes set within timber mullions, often accompanied by mirrored back panels and glass shelving.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved architectural details, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural age-related craquelure or wear to the painted surface. Examining door hinges, internal drawer construction, and wood shrinkage on panel backings can confirm age.

Position the cabinet as a singular focal point against a neutral or boldly wallpapered wall in a dining room or drawing room. Interior shelves can be styled with monochromatic porcelain, glassware, or collected curiosities to complement the detailed timber fretwork.

Maintain the painted finish by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and avoiding chemical polishes or moisture. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement, joint separation, or paint cracking.
