Antique Gilt Bronze Figural Cherub Mantel Clock By John Bennett.
This lovely antique mantel clock has a gilt bronze case starting at the top with a shaped and patterned housing for the movement. Underneath this housing is then a beautifully cast sitting cherub holding the movement housing which is very unusual and simply beautiful! The cherub is then sitting on what appears to be a rock which leads to the circular, shaped base which has an array of cast ropes and ribbons. The case is then finished by four beautifully shaped feet.
The dial in then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the maker “JOHN BENNETT 64 & 65 CHEAPSIDE LONDON”. Finally the dial is finished by two lovely shaped hands.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It ticks away as it should and chimes the number of hours on the hour as well as once on the half past via a bell. The movement is then stamped like the dial by the maker “JOHN BENNETT 64 & 65 CHEAPSIDE LONDON”. It is complete with both its regulating pendulum and winding key.
It measures approximately:
- 13.5” / 34.5cm Tall.
- 7” / 17.75cm Wide.
- 7.5” / 19cm Deep.
