Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Silk-thread pendulum suspension: French clock movement mechanism made before the mid-nineteenth century.
Outside countwheel on the backplate: striking mechanism standard before the 1860s.
Engine-turned silvered dial: French dial finishing typical of the Louis-Philippe period.
Darkened recesses in the cast case: natural oxidisation of old gilding.

This French gilt bronze figural mantel clock sits in the Turkish taste, dating from the mid-nineteenth century around 1850. The piece displays a bright gold colour across its gilded case and sculptural elements, featuring a seated female figure in Turkish attire resting against a tree stump while holding a dove on her outstretched arm. An engine-turned silvered dial with black Roman numerals is set centrally into the rocky outcrop base, flanked by a carved flower bloom to one side and intricate scrollwork along the bottom. The rectangular plinth base below incorporates ornate cast mouldings, repeating crescent motifs, fluted vertical panels, and elaborate scrolling feet at the corners. Measuring 39 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, this clock fits neatly onto a traditional mantelpiece or side table in a living room, study, or hallway as a decorative timepiece.

A French gilt bronze figural clock, often referred to as an ormolu clock, is a decorative timepiece produced primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries in France. These clocks feature finely sculpted bronze figures representing classical, historical, or exotic themes mounted on elaborate gilded bases.

These clocks were cast in bronze using the lost-wax or sand casting method and gilded using the mercury gilding process, known as fire gilding. The mechanical clock movements typically feature enamelled or cast dials driven by twin-train spring mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces display heavy casting, crisp hand-chased detailing, and a mercury-gilded finish that retains a distinct warm gold lustre. The internal clock movements frequently bear French maker stamps, serial numbers, or countwheel striking systems.

A figural clock serves as a focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Combining it with clean-lined contemporary furniture or minimalist artwork creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern aesthetics.

Gilt bronze should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural bristle brush. Avoid abrasive metal polishes and chemical cleaners, which permanently strip the delicate gold layer from the underlying bronze.
