A Rosewood Domed Top Tea Caddy

Description

A rosewood domed top tea caddy concealing two lidded compartments;  the lid with a panel of satinwood inlaid with a picture of Muckross Abbey, Killarney, the whole piece extensively decorated with ‘Tunbridgeware’.  A fine example.  Circa 1840/1850

Probably made by Henry Hollamby  (1819 – 1896) who sold his Tunbridge ware panels to Killarney Ware makers.  Source:  Tunbridge Ware’ by Brian Austen, 1989, page 195

We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold Open Weekends from time to time.

A tea caddy is a lockable wooden, metal, or ceramic container made to store dry tea leaves. Popularised in Western Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, tea was an expensive commodity requiring secure storage in the home.

High-end tea caddies were predominantly crafted from exotic hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood. Decorators often used ivory, mother-of-pearl, brass fittings, and fine timber marquetry or micro-mosaic inlays to decorate the exterior.
