A Louis Philippe mirror originates from the French monarchical period of the mid-19th century, characterised by restrained neoclassical proportions, rounded top corners, and subtle decorative mouldings without the excessive ornamentation of earlier periods.

These frames were typically constructed from carved soft or hardwoods layered with gesso, an artisanal mixture of chalk and binder, which was then hand-gilded with gold leaf or painted and aged.
