The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against industrial manufacturing, emphasising handcraftsmanship, traditional construction methods, and simple, honest forms inspired by medieval and vernacular design.

Craftsmen of this period predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as oak, ash, and elm, frequently pairing structural timber with natural leather, rush, or woven seating materials secured with exposed tacks or pegged joints.

Authenticity is identified through construction techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed surfaces, subtle tool marks, use of quarter-sawn oak exhibiting medullary rays, and period-appropriate hardware or upholstery fastening.

This seating style integrates well into modern spaces by serving as a tactile accent piece, pairing effectively with minimalist tables, neutral textiles, and contemporary architectural elements to add structural warmth and historical depth.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically treating timber with microcrystalline wax while protecting leather upholstery with suitable conditioners.
