Originating in France during the late 18th century, the cheval mirror is a full-length glass mounted on a swivelling frame supported by four legs. The term cheval comes from the French word for horse, referring to the four-legged trestle base.

Traditional pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-turned supports, brass pivoting hardware, and mercury-silvered or early vacuum-silvered glass plates.

Authentication involves examining the construction methods, such as hand-cut screws, dovetail joints where applicable, the presence of foxing or slight imperfections in the mirror plate, and the natural patina and oxidisation on the brass hardware.

A standing mirror can be positioned to bounce natural light around a contemporary bedroom or dressing room, creating a striking focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist or eclectic design schemes.

To preserve both the frame and the silvering on the glass, use a soft, dry microfibre cloth for dusting and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the aged wooden finish or seep behind the mirror plate.
