Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Giltwood overmantel mirrors gained prominence in European interior design during the 17th and 18th centuries, specifically designed to be mounted above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and maximise natural light within formal reception rooms.

These pieces are traditionally constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods, which are then coated in layers of gesso and bole before being meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with thin sheets of genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit hand-carved detailing with natural tool marks, genuine foxing or mercury silvering on old glass plates, and aged gesso showing characteristic shrinkage cracks and oxidisation beneath the gold leaf.

Positioning an ornate giltwood mirror above a contemporary minimalist fireplace or leaning it unhung against a plain wall creates a striking focal point, balancing historical grandeur with clean, modern architectural lines.

Giltwood requires delicate maintenance, avoiding liquid cleaners, abrasive cloths, and direct sunlight; instead, dust gently with a soft dry ostrich feather duster to protect the fragile gold leaf surface.
